Halloween & Black Cats

Why is Halloween so synonymous with Black cats? Why are black cats considered unlucky? Did you know that there is an actual Black Cat Day?

Apparently this all dates back to mediaeval times, especially in France and Spain when black cats were associated with witchcraft and were considered bad luck. Think Joan of Arc! These black cat superstitions come into force around the time of Halloween as Halloween itself is associated with witches and wizards etc. What utter nonsense!

According to Cats Protection, the UK’s largest cat welfare charity, the national Black Cat Day is held annually on 27 October, recognising the black cats in our lives.

I currently have a pretty tortoiseshell rescue cat from Cats Protection, called Lucy Honeychurch. (Avid readers will recognise the name from A Room with a View from E.M. Forster). Years ago I did have a black cat who we named Boris, (after Boris Becker; Boris and his sister arrived during the Wimbledon fortnight!). Boris was an affectionate cat who loved being picked up but could change temperament in a second.

I make lots of sewing gifts from cat fabric, including bags, bunting and wallets. However I have never made anything specifically for Halloween. So a few weeks ago when I spotted this wonderful fabric I simply just couldn’t resist! The fabric features lots of mischevious black cat faces in various poses. I love the background colour too, which is a pale lilac.

So far I have made some goody or treat bags and also some delightful bunting which I think, as a cat lover, would look good displayed all year round, not just for Halloween.

If you like black cats, then have a look at my Etsy shop where I also sell other black cat themed products, not just Halloween.

And finally remember, a black cat is not just for Halloween but for life!!
